Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated SEMICON India 2026 in New Delhi, marking a significant milestone in the country’s journey toward becoming a major global semiconductor hub. The three-day event brings together policymakers, global technology leaders, researchers, investors, startups, and manufacturers to accelerate the growth of the India semiconductor industry and strengthen the nation’s position in the global electronics value chain.
Held under the theme “Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem,” the event reflects India’s ambition to move beyond electronics assembly and establish capabilities across semiconductor design, fabrication, packaging, research, and advanced manufacturing. More than 600 exhibitors and delegates from over 50 countries are participating, highlighting the growing international interest in the India semiconductor industry.
Building a Complete Semiconductor Ecosystem
One of the main messages being derived from SEMICON India 2026 is that India’s vision in relation to semiconductors goes well beyond the production of chips. The government plans to build an entire ecosystem that would include research and development, talent development, design capabilities, materials, machines, packaging, and testing.
The Semicon 2.0 initiative involves a comprehensive plan that would involve support for six pillars including chip design, machinery and materials, fab plants, assembly and packaging, R&D, and talent development. The initiative aims to create a resilient and self-sustaining India semiconductor industry capable of competing on a global scale.
Massive Investments Fuel Growth
Substantial investment is being made for India’s semiconductor push. According to reports within the industry, investments amounting to more than ₹2 lakh crore have started pouring in for semiconductor fabrication, assembly, and infrastructure-related projects. There are several facilities currently under construction in India, including projects by Tata Electronics, Micron, CG Power, and Kaynes Semicon.
The fast-growing India semiconductor industry has started attracting some of the biggest names in the world of technology as well. Prior to the event, meetings were held between Prime Minister Modi and executives of companies such as Micron Technology, Intel, AMD, ASML, Infineon, Applied Materials, and Tokyo Electron.
Talent Development Remains a Priority
Availability of a talented workforce is key to fostering sustained growth. The government has placed a high value on semiconductor education and training programs as a critical component of its strategy. As per industry sources, India has produced tens of thousands of semiconductor engineers over the past few years, while students from various colleges and universities have been working on chip design programs.
This approach towards developing human capital will help meet future requirements of skilled personnel in the India semiconductor industry.
Global Supply Chains Create New Opportunities
The semiconductors industry has gained increased relevance amid efforts by governments worldwide to ensure robustness of their supply chains as well as diversification from areas with limited manufacturing facilities. The increasing competencies of India put it in a good position to capitalize on evolving trends in the global supply chain and improve its technological self-sufficiency.
Industry analysts argue that India semiconductors industry holds a special chance to develop into a reliable partner for the global electronics manufacturing industry, especially considering that the demand for technology such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, automotive electronics, and communications is rising globally.
Looking Ahead
Beyond being a meeting of minds within the industry, SEMICON India 2026 is a means of demonstrating the developments in India. It is a means of creating partnerships on a global level, as well as making investments along the entire semiconductor value chain. Thanks to policies that encourage development, expanding infrastructure, a talented workforce, and collaboration with other nations, the India semiconductor industry is slowly turning aspirations into action.
With time, India is bound to create more and more robust semiconductor ecosystems, and meetings such as SEMICON India 2026 are bound to be a part of the equation.
