India’s Monsoon Session 2026 is set to begin amid heightened political tensions, with the opposition preparing to challenge the Centre on a series of contentious national issues. From allegations surrounding the Ram temple donation controversy to concerns over the NEET paper leak and the E20 fuel policy, the session is expected to witness heated debates and frequent disruptions. While the government has outlined its legislative priorities, the opposition is determined to ensure that pressing public concerns dominate parliamentary proceedings.
Opposition Unites on Multiple Issues
The opposition has laid out their plan for Monsoon Session 2026, where they have listed a number of issues which need urgent parliamentary debate. The foremost of these issues is the matter of alleged irregularities in Ram temple donations, and top opposition leaders have called for an independent inquiry into this matter on account of its importance at the national level.
The NEET paper leak scandal would also be one of the key issues to come up during Monsoon Session 2026, since the opposition has pointed out time and again the problem of test papers being leaked, affecting millions of students in the process. Apart from this, other issues related to the education system would continue to create problems for the government.
Government Focuses on Legislative Agenda
Against all predictions of politics taking a confrontational turn, the government has embarked on the Monsoon Session 2026 with an agenda that includes eight pieces of legislation under discussion.
What is missing from the existing legislative agenda are important aspects like delimitation and the schedule for implementing the Women’s Reservation Bill. The absence of these from the legislative agenda has been criticized by the opposition.
E20 Fuel Policy Likely to Face Scrutiny
The proposal to use E20 ethanol-blended gasoline is yet another topic set for discussion during the Monsoon Session 2026. The leaders of the opposition parties have raised some doubts about the effectiveness and viability of this policy.
It should be noted that the main advantage of increasing ethanol blending in the country is the reduction in the dependency on crude oil imports. However, regardless of this fact, the opposition wants to clarify some issues concerning this policy.
Possibility of Frequent Disruptions
Political analysts expect that the Monsoon Session 2026 may experience disruptions unless agreement on debate procedures is reached. The government delegates have warned opposition parties not to disrupt the process of debate in parliament, stressing that the legislative business must not be hindered by political disputes.
On the other hand, the leaders of opposition parties argue that it is the duty of democracy to discuss the relevant issues in parliament.
A Crucial Parliamentary Test
The Monsoon Session 2026 is going to be an important political test for both the government and the opposition. The government will have to work on pushing through their legislative agenda without disturbing the proceedings in the parliament. The opposition, on the other hand, will get a chance to bring to fore those topics which they believe require more attention.
Considering there are many controversies in play and taking into account the fact that the discussion in the parliament is always fierce, the next few weeks could be interesting politically. It all depends on whether this session will prove to be more legislative or more political.
