The full Premium plan might prove to be too costly for many viewers, particularly in frugal markets such as India. The Lite plan offers a compromise by limiting interruptions without eliminating all ads or introducing all premium content.

 

Lite plan limitations are intentional. There remain ads in Shorts and YouTube Music so creators and advertisers still reap monetization opportunities. This hybrid approach enables YouTube to retain subscription income but maintain ad income from high growth arenas like short-form content.

 

The outright Premium plan for ₹149 continues to attract listeners who want the works, such as background play, offline listening, and ad-free music. The two-users-for-₹219 and family plan-for-₹299 plans do not change, aiming at families and shared accounts.

 

Worldwide, YouTube has over 125 million paying users including trial users in its Premium and YouTube Music subscriptions. India with an enormous pool of digital users is a strategic market where price is a key enabler of adoption.

 

With the introduction of Premium Lite at an affordable entry point, YouTube is hoping to reap more exposure and win over consumers who would otherwise settle for its ad-supported, free service. Whether or not the tier will be a success will hinge upon whether it can effectively upsell free users into paid subscribers without diluting take-up of the more lucrative full Premium product.
