Key Highlights :
- Paytm now offers custom UPI handles like name@ptyes or name@ptaxis, helping users protect their mobile number privacy.
- The feature is currently live for Yes Bank and Axis Bank UPI handles, with plans to expand to other banks soon.
Key Background :
As digital payments rise exponentially in India, privacy and security concerns have also increased. Traditionally, UPI IDs are linked to mobile numbers, making personal information visible during transactions. Paytm’s new update introduces custom UPI handles, allowing users to remove their phone number from the public-facing side of transactions. This change helps build trust and a stronger sense of digital identity protection.
The feature is part of Paytm’s broader vision to personalize the user experience while prioritizing data safety. By allowing users to create handles such as name@ptyes and name@ptaxis, the company not only enhances privacy but also offers a more professional payment experience, especially beneficial for entrepreneurs, influencers, and individual service providers.
Setting up the personalized UPI ID is simple. Users need to update their Paytm app, navigate to the UPI management section, and select the “Personalise UPI ID” option. They can then pick a name, verify it with a one-time password (OTP), and complete the linking process with their bank account. Once confirmed, the new UPI ID replaces the previous number-based ID for all transactions.
Paytm has also confirmed that this feature will be expanded to more banks beyond Yes Bank and Axis Bank. Early users who previously registered for custom IDs during Paytm’s initial rollout are already able to access their personalized handles again. This marks a significant move in improving user privacy while setting a precedent for other UPI service providers in India.
