Apple Moves Manufacturing Muscle to India with $22 Billion in iPhones

According to a Bloomberg article, Apple has continued to rely on India as a means of diversifying away from China, having produced $22 billion worth of iPhones in the past 12 months. The Tim Cook-led corporation currently assembles 20% of its iPhones in India, having grown iPhone production there by almost 60%.
The report follows earlier this week’s announcement by India’s Minister of Information Technology and Electronics, Ashwini Vaishnaw, that Apple exported 1.5 trillion rupees (about $17.4 billion) worth of Indian-made iPhones during the fiscal year that ended in March 2025.

At the moment, Apple operates three iPhone assembly facilities in India: one in Karnataka, two in Tamil Nadu. The Tata Group runs Apple’s other two operations in Tamil Nadu, while Foxconn runs one of the units there.
Additionally, Apple has promoted the establishment of manufacturing facilities in India by its suppliers from China, Japan, Taiwan, and other nations. Aequs (enclosures), Foxlink (cables), and Sunwoda (battery packs) are some of the major providers that have begun producing in India.

Over the past few years, Apple has been actively growing its supply network in India. When Apple began manufacturing in India at the beginning of the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme in 2020, its local content for various models was approximately 5-8%, according to a previous study. However, this has now increased to approximately 20% for various models.
Notably, the tech behemoth had been making the standard iPhone 15 model in India, but it increased the number of iPhone 16 Pro models it was assembling there last year.

Following US President Donald Trump’s announcement of “reciprocal” tariffs, Apple’s iPhone shipments from India to the US have increased, according to a Bloomberg article. It is also anticipated that the Cupertino-based tech behemoth will give its US customers preference for iPhones sourced from its Indian supply chain.
On Saturday, the Trump administration declared that the reciprocal duties would not apply to laptops, smartphones, or other electronic equipment. This implies that iPhones manufactured in China will also receive a reprieve with a lower tariff of 20% compared to the total 145% levied by the US government, while iPhones made in India will not be subject to further duties for the time being.
